Tiffany S Hemming BVMS MSc PhD MBA DACVPM (epidemiology) CertWEL MIHM MRCVS RAVC,  Chairman of Trustees

After graduating, Tiffany worked in mixed practice for three years before completing a thesis MSc, and subsequently a PhD, in epidemiology at the University of Guelph, Canada. She joined the Territorial Army as a Veterinary Officer in 1997, transferring to the Regular Army in 2000.  She has been employed in several different roles in Germany, Whitehall, Washington DC, Preston and Salisbury, as well as commanding a medical squadron for two years and deploying with them to Afghanistan in 2009/10.  She has also deployed to Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina.  She is currently employed as a Lieutenant-Colonel in a policy position in Whitehall.  Her particular interests within animal welfare science are in working animals, welfare issues due to ignorance and educational issues associated with the improvement of animal welfare. Tiffany was elected Chairman in November 2011.

 

Joanne Fielder MRCVS

After graduating from the R(D)SVS Edinburgh in 1997, Joanne spent two years in mixed practice, followed by a 12 month voluntary position in Indonesia working for the Orangutan Foundation International, where she had sole veterinary responsibility for over 90 orphaned juvenile orangutans. Following this she spent three years working for International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) as global coordinator for sanctuary and rehabilitation projects, and currently works as a part time small animal clinician in Oxfordshire.

 

Pete Goddard BVetMed PhD MRCVS

Pete heads the Macaulay Institute’s Ecology Group. He has a particular interest in animal welfare, focusing especially on investigating behavioural and physiological correlates of welfare in ruminants under extensive systems of management. He was a member of the international programme review panel of the CSIC (Spain) in 2005 and recently contributed to the development and delivery of a new international advanced course on animal welfare under the auspices of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies.

 

David Harwood BVetMed MRCVS

David qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1974, and worked in farm animal practice until 1983. He now works at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in Winchester. In addition to routine diagnostic work, he manages the VLA animal welfare sub-programme, and has a particular interest in farm animal welfare surveillance and veterinary forensic work. He is a member of the VLA Cattle Group and the VLA Small Ruminant Group (as goat advisor).
 
He was President of the British Cattle Veterinary Association in 2002 / 2003.  He is also an Honorary Vet for the British Goat Society, lectures at most UK Vet Schools on goat health and welfare, and edits the Goat Veterinary Society Journal.

 
 

Chris Laurence MBE QVRM TD BVSc MRCVS

A Bristol graduate, Chris worked for 30 years in a predominantly small animal practice in Chippenham. In 1998 he joined the RSPCA and in 1999 became the charity's Chief Veterinary Officer. In 2003 Chris was appointed Veterinary Director at the Dog's Trust and he retired from this post in 2011. He was awarded an MBE in recognition of his work on the Animal Welfare Act. Chris is a member of the Advisory Council on the Welfare Issues of Dog Breeding and is also a trustee of the RSPCA. 

 

Harvey Locke BVSc MRCVS, BVA Past President

Graduating from Liverpool University in 1969, Harvey has been in full time general practice for the last 40 years. On qualifying he became the fourth consecutive generation of vets in his family.After spending four years in mixed agricultural practice in Staffordshire, he returned to his native Stockport and small animal practice. In 1976, he established the Woodcroft Veterinary Group which has grown to an 18 vet practice with a Tier 3 hospital and five branch practices. As well as being a busy first opinion practice, Woodcroft Veterinary Group also provides a multidiscipline referral service and an emergency “out of hours” clinic serving 21 local practices. Harvey served as BVA President for the 2010/2011 BVA association year. 

 

Emma Milne BVSC MRCVS

Emma qualified from Bristol University vet school in 1996. She then spent a year doing fully mixed work, the farm side mostly comprising beef and sheep work with a small amount of equine followed by six years in small animal practices. She now works for Minster Veterinary Practice in York. Emma has a strong interest in animal welfare in all its forms and has been particularly involved with the issue of tail-docking. Her book ‘The Truth about Cats and Dogs’ was published in 2007 and tackles her other main passion- the detrimental effect of pedigree breeding on the health of dogs and cats.

 

Andrea Nolan MVB PhD MRCVS 

Andrea is Vice Principle of the University of Glasgow. In 2001 she was awarded Honorary Life membership of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research workers, and in 2004, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. She has contributed to the development of education in the field of veterinary medicine, holding European diplomas in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and Veterinary Anaesthesia, over the last 20 years she has contributed regularly to continuing profession development. Her particular area of interest is in animal pain, its recognition and treatment.

   Carl Padgett, BVMS CertCHP MRCVS , BVA President 

Carl qualified in 1989 and spent six years in mixed practice in Worcester and the Cotswolds before returning to his native Lancaster where he is now a partner in a 14-vet mixed practice. His main interests are farm animal practice and proactive approaches to animal health and welfare, promoting strategic approaches to preventative medicine on farms. Carl is also actively involved in veterinary education and politics. Carl is the BVA President for the 2011-2012 association year.

 

Pete Southgate BVetMed MSc MRCVS

Pete graduated in 1979 and after a number of years in practice, took an MSc in aquatic veterinary studies at Stirling University where he stayed as a diagnostic fish pathologist for six years. He then became a freelance consultant in fish disease to the developing aquaculture industry. Since 1997 he has been a partner in the Fish Vet Group and he has a particular interest in fish welfare.

 

Ed Varley BVetMed MSc CertWEL MRCVS 

After three years working in mixed practice, Ed began a career in the State Veterinary Service, most recently working at the heart of Defra's animal welfare policy. Ed prepared the successful welfare case for banning the use of crates for veal calves in the European Union and after a visit to Tanzania he wrote a bilateral agreement which established health and welfare controls for the import of captive birds. He is a founder member and current chairman of the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association (AWSELVA) and has been a veterinary adviser to the Farm Animal Welfare Council for 15 years.

Elaine Watson BVSc MSc MRCVS CVMA

Following her graduation from Glasgow Veterinary School Professor Watson worked in bovine and equine reproduction in a number of settings in the UK and US. In 2003 she was appointed Dean of the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Science (R (D) SVS) and recently led a successful bid to establish an International Centre for Animal Welfare Education at the R(D)SVS. The Centre is due to be launched in Autumn 2010 and Professor Watson will hold the post of Chair in International Animal Welfare.

 

Sean Wensley BVSc MSc Grad.DMS MRCVS

Sean graduated from Liverpool Vet School in 2003, then obtained a masters degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from Edinburgh Vet School in 2004. After three years working in both companion animal and exotics veterinary practices he joined PDSA as a Senior Veterinary Surgeon of Communication and Education. Sean has contributed to animal welfare and conservation projects in East Africa, China, India, Europe and the Caribbean. He is a member of the Companion Animal Welfare Council (CAWC) and a committee member of the BVA Ethics and Welfare Group; the BVA Overseas Group and the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association (AWSELVA).
