  Carl Padgett, Chairman of Trustees
BVMS CertCHP MRCVS

Carl qualified in 1989 and spent six years in mixed practice in Worcester and the Cotswolds before returning to his native Lancaster where he is now a partner in a 14-vet mixed practice. His main interests are farm animal practice and proactive approaches to animal health and welfare, promoting strategic approaches to preventative medicine on farms. Carl is also actively involved in veterinary education and politics. Carl was made Chairman of Trustees in 2006.

   
Kate Kerr
BVM&S DWEL MRCVS NSch

Kate graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 1977 and spent ten years in mixed practice during which time se also taught animal care. In 1991 she joined the State Veterinary Service where she has held various posts including providing support and advice on veterinary training to the Chief Veterinary Officer. Kate is a specialist in animal welfare and has an RCVS diploma in welfare science, ethics and law. Kate first became a trustee in 1998 and was Chairman from 2001-2006.



 

Major Tiffany S Cottrell
BVMS MSc PhD DACVPM (epidemiology) CertWEL MRCVS RAVC

After graduating, Tiffany moved to Canada where she completed a thesis MSc, and subsequently a PhD, in epidemiology at the University of Guelph, Ontario.  She joined the Territorial Army as a Veterinary Officer in 1997 and continued to complete military training throughout her time in Canada. She was deployed as Veterinary Officer to Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina between October 2000 and June 2001 and now works for the Defence Intelligence Staff / Defence Medical Services Department in Whitehall.  Her particular interests within animal welfare science are in working animals, welfare issues due to ignorance and educational issues associated with the improvement of animal welfare.

   
 

Andrea Nolan
MVB PhD MRCVS 

Andrea is Vice Principle of the University of Glasgow.  In 2001 she was awarded Honorary Life membership of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research workers, and in 2004, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.  She has contributed to the development of education in the field of veterinary medicine, holding European diplomas in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and Veterinary Anaesthesia, over the last 20 years she has contributed regularly to continuing profession development.  Her particular area of interest is in animal pain, its recognition and treatment.



 

Pete Goddard 
BVetMed PhD MRCVS

Pete heads the Macaulay Institute’s Ecology Group.  He has a particular interest in animal welfare, focusing especially on investigating behavioural and physiological correlates of welfare in ruminants under extensive systems of management.   He was a member of the international programme review panel of the CSIC (Spain) in 2005 and recently contributed to the development and delivery of a new international advanced course on animal welfare under the auspices of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies.



David Chennells
MA VetMB CertPM MRCVS

Following his graduation in 1976 David has spent much of his career in general and swine practice, except for a three-year period in the State Veterinary Service. He is the senior partner of a seven-vet mixed practice and current President of the Pig Veterinary Society. He also teaches and is involved with various research projects and several pig industry advisory committees. He lives on and runs a sheep and arable farm in Buckinghamshire.



 

Andrew Trawford
BVSc MSc MRCVS CVMA

Andrew has been working with charities in different countries thoughout his career. He is now Director of Veterinary Services at the Donkey Sanctuary. After graduating in 1969 he went into general practice before working in Africa, Canada, the Carribbean, the Middle East and Malaysia for British Government overseas aid projects. He still travels extensively to develop extension programmes for the veterinary health and welfare of donkeys.



Pete Southgate
BVetMed MSc MRCVS

Pete graduated in 1979 and after a number of years in practice, took an MSc in aquatic veterinary studies at Stirling University where he stayed as a diagnostic fish pathologist for six years. He then became a freelance consultant in fish disease to the developing aquaculture industry. Since 1997 he has been a partner in the Fish Vet Group and he has a particular interest in fish welfare.



Simon Adams
BVMS BSc MRCVS

Since graduating in 1985 Simon’s key interests have been wildlife and zoo medicine. He has worked with the Zoological Society of London and other international organisations to improve the welfare of both wild and captive zoo species. He also works in the fields of racing greyhound and equine welfare and is campaigning for a scientific, research led and ‘evolving’ welfare policy for the veterinary profession in the future.



Wendy Harrison
BSc BVetMed PhD MRCVS

Wendy graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1997 and spent a short time in general practice before starting a PhD in London looking at the vascular complications of diabetes. She then spent 18 months working at the University of Georgia (US) in the large animal department looking at the mechanisms of bovine and equine laminitis. Wendy then returned to the UK and now works at GlaxoSmithKline. She sits on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Council.



  Sean Wensley
BVSc MSc MRCVS

Sean qualified in 2003, then obtained a Masters degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare in 2004. He worked in a companion animal and exotics veterinary practice in Liverpool for 16 months, and is currently working as a locum vet in the South-West. Sean has represented the veterinary profession in Europe in seeking to end the trade of wild-caught birds in to the EU, and has a keen interest in promoting a solid science-based approach to animal welfare amongst the veterinary profession.
 

 

 

Nick Blayney, BVA President 
BVSc MRCVS

Nick qualified from Liverpool in 1980 and has been in full time practice ever since. He spent a decade working in Herefordshire, in mainly farm and equine work and then bought a practice in Warwickshire of which he is still principal. Nick has been involved in BVA affairs for nearly twenty years.  The Chairman of BVA’s Members’ Services Group until October 2006, Nick became BVA President-Elect on 1 October 2006 and BVA President on Sunday 30 September 2007

   
David Catlow, BVA President

David Catlow, BVA Past President

David graduated from Liverpool University Veterinary School in 1987 and immediately joined a 5-vet mixed practice on the Fylde coast, Lancashire. He joined the partnership in 1992 and has helped to develop the practice into what is now a 3-centre 14 vet practice. His work is predominantly with horses and farm animals across the county of Lancashire. In his spare time David regularly breeds horses, attempting to breed that elusive “next show jumping champion”, and has performed his own equine Embryo Transfers in pursuit of that aim.
