BVA AWF Animal Welfare Forum for Veterinary Students 17th - 18th September 2008

Our two day Animal Welfare Forum for final year veterinary students takes place before the Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) conference at Lancaster University each September.

The forum provides an opportunity for veterinary students to broaden and consolidate animal welfare awareness and knowledge shortly before they become veterinary surgeons.  The event is overseen by our Chairman, Carl Padgett, and is an effective, and fun, way to learn.

The students work in small groups to discuss a variety of large and small animal welfare cases and are guided by tutors who encourage the exploration and discussion of the welfare, ethical and legal implications of the cases for the animals, the clients and the veterinary practice.

The students then present their conclusions to the whole group through role plays, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere while also encouraging thought about some serious welfare issues.

BVA AWF Annual Discussion Forum 12th May 2009

As part of our aim to improve animal welfare through debate, we hold an annual Discussion Forum which brings fellow vets, animal welfare and government organisations together in order to identify and discuss important welfare-related issues.

The topics for discussion are based on suggestions from our Divisional Representatives and a programme for our next Forum will be available in the spring.

BVA AWF Discussion Forum 2008

Following the success of last years event, we chose a new and larger venue to host the BVA AWF annual Discussion Forum 2008. We welcomed more delegates than ever, and were particularly pleased to see so many BVA AWF Divisional Representatives as well as representatives from the BVA Ethics and Welfare Group and Veterinary Policy Group, vet schools, RSPCA, DEFRA, and of course; members of the press.

Our Divisional Representatives were instrumental in designing the programme based on the welfare issues they have identified at grass roots level. Topics on the agenda, which included 'Designer animals or breeding for welfare?' and 'Put your money where your mouth is: can people afford good welfare in food production', were certainly interesting and diverse.

Click here to read summary of the day.

A selection of the presentations from the day can be found below. The presentations were filmed and are available to view on VETS.TV.

Can people afford animal welfare in food production? - Amanda Miles, Freedom Food
Can people afford animal welfare in food production? - Richard Bennett, Farm Animal Welfare Council
Can people afford animal welfare in food production? - David Gibson, Moy Park

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEXT BVA AWF DISCUSSION FORUM WILL TAKE PLACE ON 12TH MAY 2009.

BVA AWF Welfare Forum for veterinary students 2007

We had no problem encouraging delegates to attend as our Forum in 2007 as the event has received such positive word of mouth from previous attendees. All the students were incredibly enthusiastic and threw themselves into the role plays which were highly entertaining and even hilarious at times.

Their feedback has all been excellent and they have particularly highlighted how useful and thought provoking the forum was while still being fun.  They also found the cases covered an interesting mix of topics and were very relevant to life in practice and described the tutors as “knowledgeable and good at guiding without overpowering the group”.

Some of our tutors were ‘old hands’ and some who were taking part in the forum for the first time but they were all fantastic to work with.  We would like to thank them all for so generously giving up their time and look forward to seeing them again next year!
